Substation Design Projects

Schramm Substation and East Yuma Tap and Transmission Line

Y-W Electric Association, Akron, Colorado, 2006-2007

Design of a 115-12.47kV, 10MVA substation and a new transmission line to serve growing load including a new Ethanol plant. Transmission design included the development of a three-switch tap structure on an existing 115kV transmission line and the design of a 0.8 mile 115kV transmission line with a separate tap for a future substation. Substation design included ground grid design and electrical design of a transmission dead-end, circuit switcher, transformer and a five bay recloser structure with two sets of regulators, along with the development of the construction contract and equipment specifications.

Plainview Gas Compressor Substation and Transmission Line

Highline Electric Association, Holyoke, Colorado, 2007:

Design of 69X115-12.47kV, 67.2MVA substation to power dual 17,000 hp motors.  Design included addition of 2.5 miles of 69kV transmission line spaced at 115kV for future voltage upgrade.  Substation consists of dual 33.6MVA transformers, dual 3333 kva regulators, 2 high side breakers and 3 low side breakers.  Additionally, two 5.4MVAR and one 10.8MVAR capacitor banks were added for voltage support.  Construction contracts and equipment specifications are included with the design.

Grandview Substation

La Plata Electric Association, Durango Colorado, 2005:

Design of 115-12.47kV, 10.5MVA substation.  Design included utilizing La Plata’s standards with modifications for this specific application, ground grid design, foundation designs via a partnership with a civil/structural firm, construction contracts and equipment specifications.

Henderson, East, and South Substations

City of Fort Morgan, Colorado, 2001-2004:

Complete design of two 115-12.47kV, 20MVA substations and one circuit switcher/relaying addition, including construction contracts, equipment specifications, and construction observation. Complete relaying coordination and setting, testing, and checkout for the substation. Work included design of complete SCADA system.

Platte Substation

Highline Electric Association, Holyoke, Colorado, 2003:

Design of 69-12.47kV, 3.75MVA substation, sized for future 12.5MVA. Design included utilizing salvaged transformer and steel, ground grid design, foundation designs via a partnership with a civil/structural firm, construction contracts and equipment specifications.

BP-3 Substation

City of Tallahassee, Florida, 2003-2006:

In-progress project to rebuild an existing 115-12.47kV substation with two 28MVA transformers in place from a low-lying area to a higher elevation (earth fill) on the same property. Existing substation has eight 115kV lines and two transformers. The new design encompasses bypassing the substation with four of the lines and designing a ring bus for two transformers, four 115kV lines, two future line positions and provision for connection of a mobile transformer. The design scope includes complete physical design drawings, construction contracts and specifications.

Blue Door, Cortez, East Cortez, and Nuchu Substations

Empire Electric Association, Cortez, Colorado, 1995-1998:

Four 115/12.47kV substations, including design, material specifications and bidding, construction contracts, construction observation, relaying and control, testing, and checkout.
