Generation Interconnection Projects

Western Nebraska Wind Farm Feasibility Study

Generation Energy, Kimball, Nebraska, 2008:

Interconnection feasibility study for the addition of wind generation in Nebraska, including: maximum power injection without transmission upgrades; analysis and opinions of cost for upgrades needed for up to 250MW and 500MW. Connection analysis included 115kV, 230kV, and 345kV transmission lines and busses.

Bottle Rock Geothermal Power Plant Re-Start

Wood Group, Cobb, California, 2007:

Design of a 13.8kV, 55MVA Generator protection system for a geothermal plant in Cobb, California. The plant had been mothballed for 14 years then refurbished and restarted in 2007. Work included relay specifications, single line diagram and relay function sheet, three line diagrams, DC schematics, relay settings and coordination study for generator protection, transformer protection, auxiliary transformer protection, and line protection. Performed Pacific Gas & Electric Large Generator Interconnection Agreement (LGIA) interface relaying, short circuit and load flow studies and relay time-current coordination (TCC) using SKM Power Tools software.

Perham Waste Recovery Generating Station

Barlow Projects, Inc., Perham, Minnesota, 2001-2002:

Design of a 115-12.47kV, 5MVA substation and generator application for a waste-to-energy generating system interconnecting to the local utility. Work included equipment recommendations and coordination, construction contract, field work to determine existing site modifications and retrofit requirements, protective relaying selection and application, and commissioning. Generator application work included design of a new excitation control system, generator protection, utility interconnection requirements, generator breaker controls and interface to the plant operating system, and checkout and testing of the generator during start-up of the plant.

DST Cogeneration Plant

DST Realty of California, Inc., El Dorado Hills, California, 2003-2004:

Electrical design of new cogeneration plant for two 2100kW gas generators, including generator step-up transformer, conduit and duct bank design, 480V and 120V distribution, protective relaying, Pacific Gas & Electric Rule 21 interface relaying, feeder protection, and MCC design interface for plant auxiliaries. Performed short circuit and load flow studies and relay time-current coordination (TCC) using SKM Power Tools software. Designed duct systems and evaluated cable in ducts using AmpCalc software.

Ox Mountain Landfill Gas 60kV Substation

Ameresco, Half Moon Bay LLC, California, 2005:

Design new 60kV – 4160V, 20MVA substation including protective relaying, and transformer and 60kV specifications, Pacific Gas & Electric Rule 21 relaying, generator and transformer protection for three 1914kW, 4160V landfill gas generators. Applied multiple relays, including: Schweitzer SEL-351 relay for utility interconnection protection, Schweitzer SEL-387 and SEL-551 relays for transformer protection, and Beckwith M3425A for generator protection. Performed short circuit studies and relay time-current coordination (TCC) using SKM Power Tools software.

City of San Bernardino Municipal Water Department

Encorp, San Bernardino, California, 2004:

Southern California Edison Rule 21 interconnection relaying and fault study for two 750kW, 4160V gas generators. Generators are installed in different locations within the facility requiring two separate interconnection relays. Used Beckwith M3410A interconnection relay, Beckwith M3425A generator protection relay, and Basler Electric BE1-51 for ground bank ground fault detection on the utility system. Performed short circuit studies and relay time-current coordination (TCC) using SKM Power Tools software.

IEEE P1547.2 Working Group for the Application Guide to the Generation
Interconnection Standard, 2002-2008

Assisting in the development of the IEEE Standard P1547 application guide. With EEC’s extensive experience in this area we are pleased to volunteer to assist in the development of the application guide.
